The Production Process
Terracotta a pottery: is made from the red clay that is found in the delta region of the River Ganga as it empties itself into the Bay Bengal . The quality of clay is similar in consistency to the more popularly known China clay that is widely used many ceramic application. Terracotta can be easily identified by its reddish brown
hue. It has been widely used for hundreds of years by the residents of Eastern India for the construction of entire temple structures, brick, designed tiles, images for worship
and also for household applications.
The manufacturing process that is used to prepare terracotta items today varies very little from the methods of centuries long past.
Sifting
The clay is first sifted using a succession of fine sieves to get progressively rid of small stones and other impurities. In some areas the clay is still spread out on pallets and trampled on with bare feet to pick out the impurities.
Curing
The clay is then treated with chemicals and allowed to rest for a period of ten days, a period that is referred to as curing.
Moulding
The cured clay is now placed into the hands of the artisans who transform their ideas and give it form and substance using a Zigger or Spinning potters wheel. While most of the spinning wheels used today are electrically operated and use a motor for their revolving action, traditional
wheels that are rotated by hand still exist. These shapes the clay into the terracotta pottery that we are familiar with. First Baking / Sunning .
Products freshly spin off the wheel then undergo a drying stage. While modern ceramic ware relies on a baking process using a drier , terracotta pottery is generally left out in the sun to bake for approximately ten days in temperatures that can go up to 1200░
centigrade and beyond.
Coating
The pots are next coated on the inside and on their lips for their sophistication ceramic finish. External surfaces are left untouched to
retain their dry, raspy , earthly feel.
Firing
These pots are then again baked, this time at very high temperature in an electric kiln. Traditional kilns that natural fuels are still in vogue in areas where electricity is yet to mark. However, rural electrification programs have been successful in great measure in spreading the benefits of electricity and introducing electric kilns to terracotta minimizing breakage and giving a measure of quality control where earlier there was none. The benefits of uniform heating can be clearly seen in the uniformly finished, professional looking glossy products that are left out to cool, before embarking on their final journey into the hearts and homes of customers around the globe.
