According to Hindu mythology Ganga the River Goddess emerge as a
creation out of the turban of Shiva, the God of Destruction .
Hence the River Ganges , one of the longest Rivers in the world
and India’s most popular river is held in great religious
esteem. Millions gather on its banks on certain auspicious days
every year to take a dip in its holy waters, at large events
also referred to as Melas. The fertile plains of the Ganga with
its soft rich alluvium , contribute greatly to India’s
agriculture based economy . The same soil is brought down
through the mountains and across swiftly flowing plains and is
deposited finally as silt (Clay) at the estuarine mouth of the
river . It empties into the Bay of Bengal as the tributary River Hooghly ( Bank
of Kolkata ) on its way into the Indian Ocean.
The artisans of Bengal have used
this clay in many ways , and also set features to their host
Gods. Thus, what was born a Goddess , is recreated in the hands
of skilled artisans and clay workers.
